WATCHES WE LIKE

Iconic watch within the ZENITH chronographs, produced between late 1971 and 1975. It uses the El Primero 3019 PHC caliber at 36,000 vibrations, and no more than 2,500 units were produced, with slight variations, mainly the diver’s bezel (regulated from 5 to 55) or the aviation bezel (regulated from 1 to 12) and the dial, which was offered in black or graphite gray. It is a chronograph with a seventies feel, large in size among the big chronographs of the time as it has a 44 millimeters case (at a time when 40 mm was considered very large) and 13.9 millimeters thick, although it is very comfortable on the wrist thanks to its tonneau case.

This is a real tool watch for diving or aviation, which adds a chronograph, with markers for minutes, seconds and 1/5 of a second, and a tachymeter scale, in addition to the date at half past four o’clock. The El Primero 3019 PHC caliber introduced on January 10, 1969 caused a great impact at the time, since in addition to being the first to be automatic, and demonstrate a very high reliability in time, it operates at 36,000 vibrations per hour, while its competitors of the time remained at 19,800 vibrations: Heuer, Breitling, Hamilton-Buren, Dubois-Depraz, offering an accuracy of 1/10 of a second.
Presented in excellent condition, it presents all its original elements: the dial in perfect condition, with vanilla-colored tritium on matte black background, hands with matching tritium, the inner tachymeter bezel, which has lost a part of the numerals, the original Bakelite bezel, perfectly operable, the case in excellent condition without major marks, and the original bracelet. Also the caliber works perfectly, both in precision, as the chronograph, without the need for service until after two or three years. Now you have the opportunity to acquire this ZENITH Pilot was ahead of its time, which by its enormous size, and its high price, was not as successful as its competitors (Omega Speedmaster or Breitling Navitimer, for example), and this makes it less known but no less iconic.
